Are God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit one?

Instead of us trying to apply our logic to the Bible, it's crucial to let the Bible shape our view. What has God revealed about himself? How can we understand this? What does that mean for us?

Jesus clearly shows us that he and the Father are one. "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30 NIV).

We also see that the Holy Spirit is one with God at the deepest level. "For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God" (1 Cor. 2:11 NIV).

The Bible says there is only one God. It shows that the Father, the Son and the Spirit all do the things that only God can do. It shows that the Father, the Son and the Spirit have the characteristics of God. It shows that the Father, the Son and the Spirit are distinct from each other; each has emotions and a will.

God made us like himself. A man is fully human, a woman is fully human and they are not the same, but in marriage they are united to become one (Gen. 2:24 NIV). A loving marriage reflects the nature of God.

God is love - that is the fundamental way of describing God. This is possible within himself because the Father, the Son and Spirit are perfectly united.

The unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirity should also be carried to the next level. Jesus' prayer for us is that we would join in this unity as a testimony for the world to see. "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:20-21 NIV).
