Does baptism save you?

Baptism has long been a part of Christianity. Jesus commissioned the disciples to baptize believers. "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19 NIV). In addition, we read in Mark, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16:16 NIV).

Many have come to the conclusion that baptism itself can bring salvation. There have been some who thought that throwing water on someone just before death can save him or her.

Baptism, however, is an outward profession of conversion and faith in Jesus Christ. It is not the source of the salvation. Jesus himself is the only source of salvation.

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:9-10 NIV).

We receive God's gift of salvation by repenting of our sin, believing that Jesus is the Son of God, and trusting his death and resurrection to forgive you and bring you eternal life. "'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life'" (John 3:16).
