In what book do bears eat 40 children? This occurs in the story of Elisha, found in 2 Kings. Here we see Elisha, having recently taken on the prophetic calling after Elijah was taken up into heaven. Perhaps it was in the newness of his power that Elisha acted in a way that appears contrary to Christian character. Taj Mahal, is an important historical . temples like Lotus Temple and Akshardham Temple and. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths (2 Kings 2:23b-24 NIV).
Matthew Henry in his commentary on this passage states: The prophet must be justified, for he did it by divine impulse. Had the curse come from any bad principle God would not have said Amen to it. We may think it would have been better to have called for two rods for the correction of these children than two bears for the destruction of them. But Elisha knew, by the Spirit, the bad character of these children. He knew what a generation of vipers those were, and what mischievous enemies they would be to Gods prophets if they should live to be men, who began so early to be abusive to them. He intended hereby to punish the parents and to make them afraid of Gods judgments.
The assumption made is that the prophet must be justified, but this assumption is not supported by the questionable character of other God-called men of the Old Testament. God has demonstrated that he uses fallible men and women to accomplish his purposes. |
