Is cloning a sin?

The internet is full of information about cloning, so you can read those websites and judge for yourselves. In layman term, cloning is to 'create' another being which is genetically identical to the original. The technology itself is innocent, just as any technology in the world. More importantly, this technology is not perfected -- the success rate of cloning an individual is very low. Cloning has been practiced in agriculture and horse breeding for sometime before Dolly the sheep was born. The problem now is whether human should be cloned.

The notion of seeing a double of yourself is creepy. That might be the reason people object cloning of human.

But, is it wrong? Is it a sin?

Cloning, in itself is not mentioned in the Bible, so there is not straight answer for that. No verse or teaching saying "thou shall not clone!"

So, we have to look at the circumstances of cloning and what the Bible's view on that:

1. What is the intention of cloning? Biologically speaking, cloning an animal using nucleus replacement technique (the way Dolly was produced) does no favor to the clone, because he/she would bear the age of the nucleus donor (still controversial). It maybe useful for creating an individual of known genetic profile for pharmacological study. However, a lot of them, as I have seen, were motivated by riches and fame to exploit the use of the technology and to become the first one to clone a human. It is greed, which is one of the seven deadly sins mentioned in the Bible.

2. Does the process involving killing or cruetly of animal/human? The cloning process involves creating a number of fertilized embryos. However, not all of them will be used, as they needed to be tested genetically to see whether the embryos carry the right clone. After implantation, not every embryo can successfully develop into an individual. In the case of Dolly, about 300 embryos were created and only one clone prduced. Depending how you see life, cloning process involves wasting a lot of embryos, this might be seen as killing life. Killing is definitly wrong even outside the Bible.

3. Is cloning playing God? Personally, I think God is still in control of the world and our lives. But you may see things different than I. In terms of the feasibility of the technology, it is still in its infant state. I think it is not going to be very successful not for at least 20 years. If people are trying this technology to discount the existence of God, then it is sin. It is clearly stated in the Bible that those who don't believe in God are guilty already.

My final word is God is the creator and ruler of the universe. Trust in him and he will show you the way.
