Is drinking a sin?Absolutely not. Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding (John 2:1-11). When Jesus passed the cup introducing communion, it was a wine glass (fruit of the vine - Matthew 26:29, Mark 14:25, Luke 22:18). Looking at that verse in light of Christians being "set apart" or "sanctified," we have to look at things that the world sees us, as Christians, say and do, and how they interpret those things in light of what we say we believe. We say and believe that being "drunk" is a sin...rightly so. But, in saying that, and knowing that we are to be "set apart" from the "world," how does drinking show we are different from the world. The predominant perception the world has today when one thinks or speaks about "drinking" is partying, getting drunk, etc. We have to be careful that what we do in life does not cause our "brother to stumble" (1Co 8:13), or reflect negatively against our witness of Jesus. |
