What is the significance of some numbers that appear to be used symbolically?

One

Symbolizes unity.

Three

Symbolizes the trinity of God. This has been significantly expanded to include other concepts in the Bible and in creation.

Six

The number of man. The day on which he was created.

Seven

The number of spiritual perfection. On the seventh day of creation, God rested. This number appears many times throughout both the Old and New Testaments.

Ten

The number of divine protection. Examples include ten commandments, ten plagues in Egypt, giving a tithe (tenth).

Forty

Trials and testings. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years. Moses was on the mountain with God for 40 days and ate and drank nothing. Jonah preached that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days. Jesus fasted and was tempted for 40 days after his baptism.
