What does the Bible say about marriage?

The bible says a great deal on marriage in a single chapter: 1 Corinthians 7:1-39.

  • Marriage distracts from serving God - "It is good for a man not to marry" (v. 1 NIV).

  • Marriage helps guard against sexual immorality - "But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband" (v. 2 NIV).

  • Marriage means surrender of yourself to your partner - "The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife" (v. 4 NIV).

  • Sex within marriage should not be restrained, except for times devoted to prayer - "Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer" (v. 5 NIV).

  • Marriage must be preserved, and those divorced should seek reconciliation - "To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife" (vv. 10,11 NIV).

  • Paul's recommendation is to remain as you were when you were saved, since the time is short. If you were married, remain married, if a virgin, remain a virgin (vv. 17-35). This is his recommendation, for those who desire to be devoted to God and free from earthly concerns.

  • Marriage is not a sin; neither is singleness - "But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned" (v. 28 NIV).
