This passage has had many people wondering for many centuries. It is generally believed that this does not refer to a date. If it were a date, the same question could have been asked about 6-6-1006. Perhaps the clearest understanding of what 666 means is found from a writer around 177 AD. Irenaeus is best known for his writings against the heresies that were threatening the church. He provides the earliest commentary on the meaning of 666, which he indicates refers to a name: Although certain as to the number of the name of Antichrist, yet we should come to no rash conclusions as to the name itself, because this number is capable of being fitted to many names. Reasons for this point being reserved by the Holy Spirit. Antichrist’s reign and death (Irenaeus, Against Heresies Book 5, Ch. 30).
Using the numbers associated with each of the letters in the Greek alphabet, it was believed that the letters in the Antichrist's name would total to 666. As Irenaeus states above, there are many names for which this will hold true, so we should not attempt to pin down one person as the Antichrist using this criteria. External References |
