Pontius Pilate was the fifth Roman procurator of Judea. Under his rule, Jesus was crucified. There are numerous references to Pilate in the New Testament.

Pilate also played a significant role in the sermons and letters of the apostles:

• 1 Timothy 6:12-14

He also plays a prominent role in the Nicene Creed:

• "And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried" (Nicene Creed).
