The Bible introduces Matthew as a tax collector who became one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. "As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. His gospel, now preserved only in Greek, has been one of the most prominent writings quoted and accepted by the early Church, before the New Testament collection of writings became accepted.

Matthew's ministry, after the resurrection of Jesus, was primarily in Parthia and Ethiopia. He was killed in Ethiopia, in the city of Nadabah, around 60 AD. He was slain with a halberd, which is an axe-like blade mounted at the end of a long pole.
