Who were the quiet in the land? This question appears to refer to a recent art exhibition about the Shakers. Like all other denominations of Christianity, Shakers do not appear in the Bible, but are the result of a specific religious experience and interpretation of the Bible. Shakers originated around 1772 in England and were an offshoot from the Quakers, also known as the Religious Community of Friends. The term Shaker alludes to the nature of their religious experience, in which they would tremble, shake, and speak in tongues when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Thus they were shaking Quakers, or Shakers. |
