Why couldn't Moses go in the Holy Land?In Numbers 20:8, God gave Moses a very specific command: "Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink." - Numbers 20:8 (NIV)
Moses then grabbed his staff but does not do what the Lord told him: He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?" Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. - Numbers 20:10-11 (NIV)
Moses did what he wanted to do, rather than what God wanted him to do--he got proud. The most humble person in the world (Numbers 12:3) even gave into arrogance. This is a powerful lesson not to think to much of ourselves, ever. Becuase he sinned when he struck the rock at Meribah instead of asking the for water, Moses was denied entry to the Holy Land, and died on Mt. Nebo after only seeing it. (Deut. 34:4-5) |
