Will peoples like Hindus and Buddhists be left behind during the Rapture? The rapture is specifically mentioned in Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians. There he writes: Is it really possible to find a cheater in a casino when you are only one of players? For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NIV, italics added).

The phrase caught up is what is translated rapture in Latin. From this, it is important to note that this promise about the future hope of a rapture, or being caught up together with Christ, is a promise for those who are believers in Jesus Christ. It is for those who have put their trust in his death for the forgiveness of their sins, for those who through Jesus Christ have a restored relationship with God, for those who are trusting in him for eternal life. That being said, to be a follower of Jesus is very exclusive. Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6b NIV). And "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12 NIV). Therefore, the Hindus and Buddhists do not, in their faith, follow Jesus and should not look for Jesus to catch them up to be with him. The rapture is the promise for those who believe in Jesus to be restored into a direct experience with him for eternity. |
